To provide technical direction and support for the manufacturing of mass spectrometer products and the development of manufacturing processes.  The role covers all stages of a product’s life from early engineering units, through alpha, beta, pre-production and production and with the emphasis on characterising and improving the design and manufacturing methods to increase yield on manufacturing test and reliability in the field.


  • With reference to the product’s performance specification, define the manufacturing test specification of the product.
  • Define and control the device history record for new products (instruments).
  • Working with Research, build / characterise & verify early life (engineering unit / alpha / prototype) products.
  • Define and perform the verification of beta products concentrating on sub-assemblies likely to present:
    1. Manufacturing test yield problems
    2. Reliability issues
  • To define the manufacturing test strategy for all products.
  • To engineer new product into the manufacturing supply chain designing and building test fixtures as necessary.
  • Defining the IQ/OQ/PQ and maintenance schedule of test fixtures and equipment used in the manufacture of IVD product.
  • To provide training of suppliers in the test of products.
  • To assist in the verification of performance effecting design changes / new OEM parts.
  • Assist NPO / Manufacturing Suppliers in the diagnosis of complex or systematic faults.
  • To investigate multiple failures of product and to instigate Corrective Action as necessary.  This is done formally through NCR review with escalation to the CAPA system.
  • To perform root cause analysis on returned instruments and produce a report for circulation to the Field.



  • HND or Degree in a scientific subject or in electronics.
  • Practical experience of instrumentation.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work as an effective member of a team.
